PREVIEW: Manchester City vs Arsenal

It’s going to be 4th vs 3rd when Manchester City welcome Arsenal to the Etihad Stadium at 4pm on Sunday.

City got themselves back on track with an unglamorous but much needed 2-0 victory at home to Watford in mid-week.

Meanwhile, Arsenal missed the chance to go top of the Premier League when they came unstuck in a 2-1 defeat away at Everton on Tuesday night.

Last season, a superb Yaya Toure strike into the top corner wasn’t enough to prevent City succumbing to a 2-1 defeat at the Emirates Stadium almost a year ago to the day.

And then in the penultimate game of last season, goals from Sergio Aguero and Kevin De Bruyne weren’t enough as Arsenal twice fought back to draw 2-2 at the Etihad.

As this infographic courtesy of Premier League stats aficionados KickOff illustrates, Arsenal’s visits to City have been a mixed bag in terms of results over the last few years and the Blues will be hoping for something akin to the 6-3 victory in 2013/14 this weekend.

Arsenal’s defeat at Everton was their first on the road in their last six away matches while City’s win over Watford was only their second during the same period.

The two sides’ record over their last 10 matches is almost identical (and surprisingly, City have actually conceded fewer goals!).

Predicted City line-up:

Player to watch: Fernando

With İlkay Gündoğan expected to be sidelined for a number of months after damaging his knee ligaments against Watford, it’s a chance – possibly the last chance – for Fernando to prove he’s capable of filling the breach. Pep Guardiola spoke in glowing terms about the Brazilian’s professional attitude after he performed well in the win away at Burnley and he’s going to have to be at the top of his game if he’s selected to play against Arsenal. He’s not a player to get the pulse racing but he’s always done the simple things well and his calm head and ability to break up play could be just what City need on Sunday.

Prediction: Manchester City 3-1 Arsenal
