Manchester City produced a truly lamentable display in their defeat against CSKA Moscow at The Etihad Stadium. The Blues suffered a 2-1 defeat that leaves looking certain to be knocked out the Champions League before the knockout stages begin.
This is how the players fared, with all scores given out of ten.
Hart – 6 – His only significant action all evening to pick the ball out of his net twice. Neither of those were his fault so he doesn’t deserve the same scorn as his teammates.
Zabaleta – 5 – An uncharacteristically poor performance from the usually dependable right back. Offered little going forward and positional play was poor.
Kompany – 6 – Not especially at fault throughout the game but also couldn’t lift himself above his teammates. Tried to lead and marshal his defence but to little effect.
Demichelis – 5 – Against teams that counter attack as well as CSKA Moscow did, his lack of pace is shown up. Forced to dive into challenges and leave his colleagues exposed, games like this are where his weaknesses are shown up.
Clichy – 4 – Is this really the same player that was arguably man of the match against Manchester United? Had a hand in both goals (quite literally in the case of the first one) and barely put a foot right all night.
Fernando – 5 – Poor in possession. Extended those legs of his for a few crucial interventions but ultimately, offered as little as anybody else in City’s bid to turn this horrible campaign round.
Toure – 4 – Had he seen the game through he would have got an average rating. Scored a great free-kick and may have another big moment in him, but got a ridiculous red card when City were already down to ten men. Stupid and petulant, a player with his vast experience should know better.
Milner – 6 – Not quite the performance we’ve come to expect from Milner so far this season, but his effort stood out above a group of players who had no spark about them at all.
Navas – 5 – Needs to have support to bring him into the game but was rarely set free down the right. Completely ineffective when City needed somebody to grab the game by the scruff of the neck.
Jovetic – 5 – Yet another performance where he looked too eager to impress. Can’t fault his effort and he was happy to run at the Moscow defence – it just never got him anywhere. His passing was woeful.
Agüero – 6 – Always looking to make something happen for himself when he did have the ball, but had no service and was never going to win this one on his own.
Fernandinho – 5 – Pellegrini finally looked willing to change his system a bit when he brought the Brazilian on for Jovetic at half time. Found himself sent off for two bookings – not quite what the doctor ordered.
Nasri – 5 – Another who was brought on at half time. Struggled to create anything in this turgid team performance. By no means the most culpable player in this defeat, but had no impact.
Džeko – 5 – An ineffective substitution. Harsh to expect too much from him given the lack of service but found himself out wide on occasions where he was needed in the box.
