HALCYON DIGEST: Cardiff City 1994

City take on Cardiff City on Sunday and in anticipation the game we take a look back to the last encounter between the two sides.

On 29th January 1994 in the Fourth Round of the FA Cup at Ninian Park, Third division Cardiff pulled off something of an upset as they won 1-0 to knock out Brian Horton’s then Premier League City team. Nathan Blake’s excellent strike gave Cardiff the lead before goalkeeper Mark Grew saved a Keith Curle penalty to deny City the chance of a comeback.

City’s fortunes didn’t improve much for the rest of the season but they managed to avoid relegation by finishing 16th in the league after scoring just 38 goals, the second lowest number in the league after Ipswich Town who scored 35.

On this day Professor Brian Cox’s former band D:ream were sitting at the top of the UK Singles Chart with Things Can Only Get Better. Former Prime Minister Tony Blair later used this song to usher in a new era of British politics when New Labour came to power in 1997.
