HALCYON DIGEST: City vs Newcastle United 2007

As City prepare to take on Newcastle on Monday to night to kick of the Premier League season, here’s a look back the same fixture from September 2007.

Sven Goran-Eriksson’s City’s side ran out 3-1 winners on the day as City continued a good run of form at the start of the 2007/08 season. With the likes of Elano, Martin Petrov and Michael Johnson adding some cutting edge to a City side that was previously bereft of quality the club were enjoying their best start to the season for thirty years.

The game is most memorable for Elano’s stunning free-kick which secured the three points and moved City into 3rd in the table. Of the goal Sven said:

The third goal from Elano was fantastic. You have to have class feet to score a goal like that from such long range.

City’s starting 11:

Joe Hart, Vedran Corluka, Richard Dunne, Micah Richards, Javier Garrido, Stephen Ireland, Michael Johnson, Dietmar Hamann, Martin Petrov, Emile Mpenza, Elano

Goalscorers:

Petrov, Mpenza, Elano

On this day Phil Collins was sitting at number 17 in the UK Singles Charts with the re-release of In the Air Tonight.
