City start the defence of their Premier League title at home against newly promoted Southampton. Last season, City faced Premier League debutants Swansea in the opening game of the season and won 4-0. Roberto Mancini will be hoping for and expecting a similar outcome this time around but will have to make do without some key players due to injury.
City are without Micah Richards, who was injured on Olympic duty, and Gareth Barry, who is a long term absentee with an abdominal injury. There are doubts over Mario Balotelli who missed the Community Shield with conjunctivitis and new boy Jack Rodwell may have to wait for his debut due to a hamstring complaint.
The most notable absentee could be Joe Hart. The England number one missed international duty and the Community Shield last week due to a back injury. Costel Pantilimon could make his Premier League debut for City if Hart remains side-lined.
